Natural wall paint in bathrooms and kitchens: which products to use

Conventional decorating theory suggests you use a specialist product for bathrooms and kitchens. These are either shiny silk finishes and/or they are loaded with toxic biocides to inhibit mould growth. Bathrooms and kitchens painted with conventional plastic paints are prone to flaking and peeling because moisture always finds its way behind even waterproof plastic finishes, is trapped in the wall and ends up pushing the paint off from underneath.

Natural eco wall paints are microporous which means that they are permeable to air and moisture allowing the wall to breathe. Although water can soak through them, it can also be released again. Water does not collect on the surface which makes them less susceptible to moulds. Earthborn claypaint and earthborn emulsion are both suitable for painting walls in kitchens and bathrooms. Obviously areas subjected to regular soaking such as immediately around the shower are better tiled.

Both earthborn emulsion and earthborn claypaint are mat finishes and as such are not washable. If you require a scrubbable/washable finish e.g. the wall behind your hob, then we recommend applying a coat of clear earthborn wallglaze over the emulsion or claypaint.

Woodwork in kitchens or bathrooms can be painted with earthborn pro aqua eggshell. If you want to keep the natural wood look or a stained finish then our biopin oils or osmo stains and oils are suitable.
